Jon Jakobsen, 88, a longtime resident of Malden, who also lived in Stoneham, died Sunday, October 17, 2010 at Maplewood Place in Malden, Massachusetts. Jon was born and raised in Norway. At the age of 16, he joined the merchant marines in Norway, and began his love of the ocean. He enlisted in the Royal Norwegian Navy after the merchant marines, which brought him to the US where he met his future wife Helen. The two had dated and in 1945 upon his discharge he returned to the US where he married Helen. The two shared 60 years together until Helens passing just a few years ago. They settled down in Malden where they raised their three daughters. Jon served with the US Coast Guard in 1946, aboard the SS Alexander Clay and the SS Mission Santa Cruz. He began working as a machinist at the Boston Navy Shipyard, and later also worked at Quincy Dynamics and the Watertown Arsenal. Later in life he received his Captains license and ran fishing tours out of Plum Island and Gloucester. Even after his retirement, Jon enjoyed taking cruises all over the world with his wife.
Jon was Mason, and a member of the Coeur de Lion Commandery in Medford, where he was a Past Commander. He was also a member of the Alleppo Temple Shrine. He loved to fish, and enjoyed listening to music. He was also an avid bowler, having once scored a perfect game. In his quiet time, he enjoyed history and nature programs on television, especially Jacques Cousteau.
He is survived by his daughters, Irene H. Maggio Atkinson, NH, Janice K. Ronzio of Medford, Nancy J. Hanson of Malden, his brother, Sverre Jakobsen of Norway, as well as seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 577 Salem Street, on Thurs, Oct 21, at 10AM. Interment will follow in the Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden. Visitation will be held at the Weir - MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem Street, Malden, on Wed, Oct 20^th, from 4 - 8 PM.
